The challenge
As Leap in! grew, processing claims for support such as personal care, physiotherapy and mobility equipment through a third party brought rising costs, increased risk, reliability concerns and limited control over platform development. Manual invoice handling and plan administration was another drain on resources as participation increased.
Leap in! needed control over its core financial platform, greater processing capacity and accessible tools that gave members and their families clearer visibility of their funding.
What Mitra did
Leap in! chose Mitra as a technology partner in 2018.Together, the teams developed accessible member applications and Hedgehog, an in-house claims engine and general ledger that connects financial controls with banking settlements.
Mitra introduced machine learning for smarter invoice classification, data extraction and validation, with human-in-the-loop review for exceptions. Mitra also led the direct integration with the official Australian government NDIS APIs for automated plan and claims workflows.
Alongside engineering, Mitra provides technical advisory and leadership and access to specialist expertise as Leap in!’s needs have become more complex.
The outcome
Leap in! now reports AUD 628 million in payments to 22,843 providers in FY26, with 95% of invoices processed within one business day.
Mitra’s NDIS integration reduced the time needed to set up plans and onboard new providers from 2–3 days to under 24 hours. Mitra’s machine learning invoice automation helped reduce the invoice processing service target from four days to two and cut overtime costs, saving over AUD 50,000 a year. Fee automation contributed to 64% fewer fee invoice rejections.
Leap in! now has a smart financial platform it can enhance as its service and NDIS requirements change.
