The challenge

Cellcard’s digital services were generating excessive traffic into its core billing environment. Repeated API calls were unnecessarily hitting the Online Charging System (OCS), creating very high transaction volumes and putting pressure on a mission-critical part of the telecom estate.

At peak, more than 6 million transactions per day were hitting the OCS. The overloaded environment had previously contributed to two nationwide outages, creating customer disruption and significant commercial risk.

For a mobile operator serving more than four million subscribers, this was not simply a performance problem; it was a resilience, customer-experience and revenue-protection issue.

What Mitra did

Mitra redesigned how Cellcard’s digital channels and middleware interacted with the OCS to reduce unnecessary traffic and relieve pressure on the core billing system.

The team introduced API orchestration and a distributed caching layer, allowing frequently requested data to be served without repeatedly calling the core billing system. This reduced unnecessary traffic while improving application responsiveness.

The architecture was applied across hundreds of use cases, helping reduce load on the OCS while creating a reusable foundation for additional services and integrations.

The outcome

Peak OCS transaction volume fell from more than 6 million to around 2 million transactions per day - a reduction of approximately 66%.

The new architecture improved application responsiveness, reduced unnecessary API traffic and lowered pressure on the core billing environment.

No OCS outages were reported following deployment.

What this proves

Mitra can identify and remove architectural bottlenecks inside a complex digital estate, improving resilience and scalability without replacing the core system itself.
