The challenge
Aetna International’s digital estate had become fragmented across multiple legacy applications, creating inconsistent experiences for members, providers and internal teams.
The business was also undergoing a major change to its international service model, including the transition of much of its international private medical insurance portfolio to Allianz Partners.
The challenge was therefore broader than modernising individual applications. Aetna needed to reduce technology cost, improve delivery speed and increase engineering capacity while continuing to support a large international member base through a complex period of business change.
What Mitra did
Following an initial three-week discovery, Mitra proposed a phased modernisation programme across Aetna International’s digital estate.
The programme expanded beyond the original mobile experience to the modernisation of six digital assets including portals and services for members, providers and sponsors.
Mitra integrated more than 15 internal and external systems, introduced APIs and microservices and improved automation and engineering practices. The international mobile application was re-platformed within 12 weeks.
The outcome
The modernisation delivered simultaneous improvements in cost, speed and productivity:
67% lower operational and infrastructure cost
50% faster product and feature delivery
40% improvement in staff productivity and collaboration
What this proves
Mitra can modernise a complex digital estate while the business itself is changing, reducing run cost while increasing delivery capacity, engineering productivity and change velocity.
“The team’s collaboration has been exemplary, integrating well with IT and business colleagues… consistently delivering on time whilst optimizing costs.”
