The Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce (SLACC) is attempting to raise AUD $500,000 as part of Trail2016 in Australia over the next two years, by organising a series of fundraising activities. The first of these activities – a Fundraising Dinner and Charity Walkathon – took place on the 4th and 5th of February in Sydney. The events were a huge success and raised over $22,000 to contribute the building of the TrailSL Karapitiya Cancer Hospital in Galle, Sri Lanka
Cancer is on the increase in Sri Lanka, and this has increased the need for more cancer treatment facilities and the need to improve cancer awareness and detection. TrailSL is dedicated to bringing together communities across Sri Lanka to collectively drive the nation’s fight against cancer by means of a charity walk which carries a message of unity and understanding, while raising funds to aid cancer treatment. TrailSL funded the first Trail Hospital in Jaffna in 2011 and its goal for 2016 is to raise US$5m for a new cancer treatment facility in Galle. SLACC is contributing to this effort by raising funds to build an “Aussie Ward” in Karapitiya Hospital.
TrailSL in collaboration with SLACC has extended its activities to Australia, providing an opportunity for all overseas Sri Lankans and Friends of Sri Lanka in Australia, to unite in the spirit of giving to support the fight against cancer. Over a 100 guests participated at the fundraising dinner at Petersham Townhall in Sydney. These people also joined the 6.7km walk at Parramatta Parklands the following day.
